Portland Metro Composite (PMC) is Portland, Oregon’s first interscholastic mountain biking team now comprised of 10 “student-athletes” grades 6-12 coming from a variety of private, public schools from across the Portland metropolitan area. This past weekend the team competed in the new Oregon Interscholastic Cycling League‘s first ever NICA sanctioned RACE event in Newport, Oregon. The race was suitably called “Newport Gnarnia!”
This cross country style mountain bike race was organized with individual race heats for each of the grades participating and riders competed on a three mile race course consisting of 2 gravel climbs, some double track fire-road and several sections of technical single track trail that wound through lush coastal forests and over root covered ground. There was even a vista of the Pacific Ocean…for any riders interested in taking in the scenery.
Nine of our team members managed the trip to Newport to compete in this inaugural event. We previewed the course on Saturday afternoon and camped out as a team at South Beach State Park, were we enjoyed a campfire as riders and coaches produced handmade team uniforms in time for the Sunday morning races.
Following a healthy team breakfast on Sunday we headed to the race venue where seven of our nine student-athletes would participate in their first bike race….
When all the results were tallied and posted, our team had 3 podiums finishes (top 3), 5 riders finishing in the medals (top 5)…and all riders finishing successfully, scoring, and contributing to our team’s 3rd place finish in the team competition…
