Race Report: Hood Do Good!

This weekend Portland Metro Composite raced bikes in our second cross-country mountain bike event, put on by our new NICA, Oregon League as a team at Mt Hood Ski Bowl in Government Camp, OR. It was another stellar weekend of fun for a stellar group of middle school and high school Portlanders.

It started Saturday, with a very wet pre-ride…

The 3 mile course started with a fun section of single track winding up through the trees from Ski Bowl’s East Lodge up towards their West lodge at which point it veered right again and climbed steeply up a gravel service to a mid point on the mountain. From there the course descends swiftly down the face of the mountain on an occasionally technical set of switchbacks with bermed turns and small rollers and rock drops. Here’s the course profile…

Conditions were damp and slippery and we got cold and dirty, but we were in good spirts and improved our situation with a warm team dinner across the highway at Mt Hood Brewing Co. after our course reconnaissance was complete.

Then came Sunday. Race day!

It was still cold since the wind was blowing, with some clouds over head…but the rains stopped over night and the clouds were mixing with patches of blue sky and sunshine so the trails were drying up to the point of being perfectly tacky. Conditions were perfect for mountain biking. Situation: Hero dirt!

And as the schedule dictates, the middle school boys kicked things off at 9am with our youngest team member 11 year-old Jensen starting things off for our team. He survived the coldest race of the day like a champ, performing consistent with his race in Newport, tucking his second bike race successfully under his belt…

Next up were the high school girls, starting with the small but mighty JV field. Notably, the Oregon Leagues fastest lap times have been coming from this field while two of our girls (Emmaline and Isabelle) have been hanging tough against some fierce competition. Emmaline finished in second place this time around!

And onto the middle school girls where our team fields the fun-loving trio of Sophie, Izzy and Emily…

The weather and scenery on-course was improving dramatically…

And finally we advanced to see the high school boys take the course, when Ben jumped on the course with the rest of the sophomore boys…

and Henry and Caleb went to the line with the large field of Freshmen boys…

When the day was done, our team our team of ten (with nine racers competing) had chalked of another handful of medals (finishers in the top five), a few podiums (finishers in the top three) and to our delight, we had won the team competition…

Most importantly, we all challenged ourselves, finished safely and successfully…and all had fun!

In three weeks the team takes on Oregon League Race # 3 at Stub Steward State Park…and by that time—thanks to the generosity of the first companies to sponsor our team–we’ll have our new team jerseys, currently being made for us by Biciclista.

Thanks again to Gevenalle, Blue Bridge, REN Cycles and The Agency Realtors for making this possible!
